10 minutes more with… William ‘Bill’ Geiger

Having caught up with CONSCI back in July, we learned about the company’s plans for the year, its projects in progress and its thoughts on specialty gases. Here we dive deeper into those specialty gas market insights…Bill, tell us, are specialty gases a strong growth space right now?

It seems like every year there are new boutique gases being evaluated for use in new and developing semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. With these come the challenges of analysing their purity, isolating the impurities which are of most concern and finding the necessary detection limits to allow manufacturers to purchase products which will meet their needs.

Instrument manufacturers are continuously developing better detection equipment with more sophisticated electronic controls and software algorithms which reduce signal-to-noise to allow us to see lower and lower levels of impurities. All this is good, but ultimately when you are looking for parts-per-trillion (ppt) impurities in bulk gases you always have to have some way to separate them from the product – and that is what we do, the art of analytical separation of gas phase impurities.

Is the electronics sector still as buoyant as it has been in recent years?
