50 years a gasman – An interview with Albert Spencer

For anyone celebrating 50 years service in an industry, it is impossible for someone to fathom the changes that person has lived through.

The obvious things, like the variety of technological advancements which humans have pioneered in all sectors of life, are easier to comprehend. But to say someone began working in an industry just two years before England celebrated winning the World Cup, or two years before Martin Luther King was assassinated, does seem like a very long time ago. Just one year on from King’s death, which sent shockwaves around the US, the supersonic aircraft Concord took its’ maiden voyage – in the same year that man first walked on the Moon.

So what was life like for a young Albert Spencer who was beginning his working life? He answered, “I had a life before the gases industry as I used to build power stations for a living. I served my apprenticeship at Metrovicks, Manchester, as a steam and gas turbine engineer. I worked in this field for about 12 years. Then for three years I worked as a consultant in the gas turbine sector.”
