Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, enables a company to make specially designed parts on an as needed basis – the ultimate custom solution. While much of AM has concentrated on using polymers to create products, the trend toward the using AM for making metal parts is steadily increasing.
When we last reported on additive manufacturing (see gasworld.com/2007749.article), there were nearly 50 manufacturers producing industrial-grade AM machines, according to Terry Wohlers of Wohlers Associates, Inc., the widely recognized top authority on additive manufacturing. That number has nearly doubled, with Wohlers Report 2017 putting AM manufacturers at 97 today.
