Where does one start in such a wide field? After all, we have been manufacturing and testing gas cylinders for over a hundred years.
The title of this paper is so wide ranging, that it could include the extensive number of tests that now have to be undertaken by cylinder manufacturers when conducting the type testing programme for each new design, especially when one considers composite cylinders. Testing whilst undergoing the periodic inspection and testing of gas cylinders also needs to be discussed.
On the manufacturing front, it has to be said that cylinder efficiencies (as measured by the weight of gas carried per unit weight of the cylinder shell) have increased by a factor of at least three over the past decade, when one compares the humble seamless cylinder (Type 1) with the plastic lined Type 4 composite.
