Advances in Helium Leak Testing

Everything leaks” is a frequent comment in the leak testing business, and it is wise to consider the ramifications of that statement in the industrial gas business.

Given that every leak — from the refining process, to storage and distribution, through consumption by the enduser — represents lost profit, a good leak testing program can improve the bottom line. Leaks can also result in lower productivity, poor product quality, higher warranty costs, downtime, and potential safety hazards.

Helium leak-detection technology is affordable, easy to operate, and very robust for industrial environments. Using helium as the tracer gas in leak detection has several welldocumented benefits. The small helium molecule penetrates rapidly through extremely small channels. The concentration of helium in air is only five parts per million (ppm), allowing for the smallest leaks to be detected without background interference. Helium leak detection can also pinpoint leak location(s) and can help eliminate subjective interpretation encountered using other leak test methods.
