Air gases in oil and gas: Ever-increasing significance

Much of the talk today is about clean fuels, green energy and the hydrogen economy in particular. Taking the next step in a diversified energy mix has never been more important. But there is little doubting our continued reliance on the oil and gas business in the here and now, and potentially for some time to come too.

The onus is still on extracting every last drop of oil and literally scraping the bottom of the barrel, such is its fundamental role throughout industry and mobility alike. In turn, the air gases are just as important to the oil and gas business. From upstream operations like exploration and extraction to downstream refining, for example, nitrogen is foremost among the industrial gases at the core of the global oil industry.

Upstream activities include exploration and extraction, and increasingly fracking; liquid nitrogen and carbon dioxide are among the industrial gas products used to enhance oil production rates and yields, while also lowering total costs.
