Air Products is thinking “outside the box” for new ways to obtain helium and improve future supply reliability for its customers in opening a one-of-a-kind helium facility in Doe Canyon, Colorado.
It is no secret to anyone that knows the helium market that the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Federal Helium Reserve in Texas is a finite source of the world’s current helium supply. Eventually this source of helium, which today supplies about 20 percent of the world’s helium, will be depleted in the future and new sources must be located and developed.
The drawdown of the Federal Helium Supply and the need for new helium sources was part of the message delivered by Robert Jolley, BLM Amarillo Field Office Manager, in a recent BLM news release referencing the Helium Stewardship Act of 2013. Discussing the most recent BLM auction Jolley said, “This, in turn, is expected to incentivize private producers to develop other sources of helium —domestically and internationally — to supply the market when the Federal Helium Reserve is fully drawn down.”
