Since Air Products (www.airproducts.com) first began locating its industrial gas facilities adjacent to its customers in the 1940s, the concept of “on-site” has typically been associated with bulk gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, or hydrogen. Now, however, for the first time, Air Products is building an on-site ammonia plant to serve the burgeoning light emitting diode (LED) business.
Last fall, Air Products announced it was building two on-site ammonia plants capable of supplying 2,000 metric tons per year each at Anhui Sanan Optoelectronics, a high brightness LED manufacturer based in the Wuhu Economic and Technological Development Area in Anhui Province, China. (See Industry News, CGI December 2010, p. 5 for full story.)
Construction of the two plants is underway and they are expected to be online by the end of 2011. The redundancy of the two plants provides increased reliability and eases the way for future expansion. “Redundancy is the key to reliability by eliminating the single points of failure,” says said Bob Ford, Bulk Electronics Materials Manager for Air Products.
