An introduction to….Cryogenic sandblasting

Cryogenic sandblasting is a cleaning process through which dry ice is accelerated by compressed air, up to speeds above 300m/sec. The combined action of the thermal shock due to the temperature of the dry ice, together with the high speed of the jet and its mechanical action, allows the cleaning of surfaces subject to extremely heavy dirt.

In addition, the characteristic hardness of the dry ice pellets, together with the sublimation of the same as soon as they come into contact with the surface to be cleaned, makes the process non-abrasive on the majority of surfaces on which it is going to work. This makes it possible to carry out cleaning operations on surfaces, without modifying important parameters such as surface roughness or surface tension (or ‘wettability’).

Moreover, since the cleaning medium sublimates in contact with the surface on which it impacts, the cryogenic sandblasting process is particularly ‘ecological’, not having to take care to dispose of the sandblasting medium. It is also particularly indicated for the removal of paints, dirt, grease, powders, burrs of mechanical machining and in many other industrial sectors.
