An introduction to…Reversible electrolysis modules

Imagine taking surplus renewable energy, water and ambient air and using them to produce hydrogen or hydrocarbons. Now flick a switch and use cheap natural gas or biogas to generate electricity. Imagine being able to do all this with a single module.

This isn’t imagination – it’s reversible electrolysis.

sunfire’s reversible solid oxide cell (RSOC) represents the first time a fuel cell and an electrolyser have been combined in a single module. This enables it to make a vital contribution to the more decentralised, renewables-based energy systems of the future. Electrical energy is converted into hydrogen, which can in turn be converted into hydrocarbons. When hydrogen is not required, the module can be switched to fuel cell mode in just a few minutes. Either the hydrogen produced before the switch or cheap natural gas/biogas is then converted into electrical energy.
