Argon: more uses than you think – latest applications for the inert gas

Argon may not be in the news as much as helium, hydrogen and carbon dioxide for its rising prices, shortage or potential as a fuel, but it is all around us with its multiple industrial uses in its gaseous state.

Welding and manufacturing

Argon plays a key role in the welding industry since it provides an inert atmosphere in which welded metals will not oxidize. It is the most commonly used shielding gas in TIG (tungsten inert gas) and MIG (metal inert gas) welding and casting. In these processes, pure argon, or argon mixed with various other gases, replaces air or oxygen from the weld pool.
