Bulk transportation: Mobile pipelines on the rise

There can be little doubt that the last few years has seen a sharp increase in the use of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, particularly in public transport but also increasingly in freight, maritime and private transport as well.

As many cities in Europe gear up to reduced or zero emissions in the next few years, the pressure is on to provide the filling at points where it is convenient for bus and rail depots, commercial fleet managers and ultimately, commercial roadside filling stations.

Road transport of gases such as hydrogen and nitrogen is commonplace for the smaller volumes needed for industrial or medical applications, but for the larger volumes needed for fuel applications it is still in its relative infancy.

“The infrastructure for distribution of liquid fossil fuels grew steadily over the last 100 years and the accumulated knowledge and investment has resulted in an optimised process from oilfield to tanker to refineries, and then on to intermediate storage and finally the filling stations,” says Jim Gregory, Business Development Manager for Alternative Fuels at Luxfer Gas Cylinders in Nottingham, UK.
