Carbon dioxide analysis – Quality certification for the beverage industry

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main industrial gas considered as an ingredient, most other gases such as nitrogen are used to process, protect or propel beverages or food stuffs. This means that the quality requirements for beverage grade carbon dioxide are more demanding, as well as unique, compared to other bulk gases.

Quality requirements, industry standards and guidelines

A CO2 manufacturer will usually follow a set of procedures agreed upfront with  a beverage client. In addition to requirements agreed between supplier and client, the beverage industry also follows beverage industry guidelines and best practices set out by The Society of Beverage Technologists (ISBT). These guidelines have been harmonised with EIGA and CGA standards, thus creating a global standard. CO2 used for the carbonation of beverages is considered one of the highest grades of quality available on the market.
