Change management: Responding to cryogenic plant change with asset management

Over the last few years, the world of cryogenic gases has undergone profound changes generated by technological evolutions, which have transformed supply management methods, as well as by healthcare problems that have caused structural and operational repercussions capable of challenging even the most evolved gas distribution systems.

Furthermore, the supply chain of cryogenic gases is characterised, in many cases, by continuity constraints where interruption jeopardises sophisticated production processes or the health of patients in intensive care units in hospitals, all over the world. Possible service discontinuities are therefore synonymous with increased costs – or can generate such problems related to both legal and ethical aspects.

In the medical field, the current pandemic has caused very high consumption of medical gases and, in several cases, it has forced gas distribution operators to review procurement and refuelling strategies for their customers. In some cases, where monitoring systems had not been updated to telemetry technology, an increase in costs has occurred. This has been as a result of inefficient and unplanned deployment of refuelling loads, in order to avoid service failures. The introduction of a refuelling planning capability also leads to the opportunity to optimise refuelling routes, thus saving costs as well as vehicle travel times.
