The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law on January 4, 2011. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration), an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services, was given more authority to regulate food production, distribution and recalls.
FSMA has focused the FDA toward “prevention” of food-borne illnesses rather than primarily reacting to outbreaks of food problems after they occur. This new focus requires industry to develop a “quality management systems” based approach rather than a traditional rules-based compliance program.
