Tungsten inert gas or TIG welding is the gold standard for welding metals. Many consider it the ideal welding procedure for components travelling into outer space. It’s known as the highest-purity form of manual/hand welding, renowned for its refinement, repeatability and accuracy. There are other automated processes, such as electron-beam and laser, that are also used in aerospace and other high-purity industries.
Proper shielding gas coverage is integral for successful TIG welds. While helium or a helium mixture is an option, most experienced welders insist on pure argon as a shielding gas.
