Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a media star. No other gas has been – or is – the subject of so many reports in the media. However, it receives all of this attention due to its reputation as a global villain; among the general public it is primarily known as a greenhouse gas.
By contrast, there are hardly any reports about its special properties, such as its inertness or its high water solubility, which make it a versatile gas with a range of uses, including for the food, beverage and manufacturing industries, as well as for the water industry.
Besides water, plants primarily contain carbon compounds. They get the carbon they need for roots, stems, leaves and fruit from the CO2 in the atmosphere. Plants, in turn, form the basic food source for the animal kingdom as a whole, including humans.
