In 1949, when Joseph Martin Sr. and his associate Tom Qualey set up shop as Middlesex Welding Supply, their location in Everett, Massachusetts, was at the center of metropolitan Boston’s thriving metal fab, manufacturing, and shipbuilding industries.
Today, the company’s Everett headquarters is centrally located to the Boston/Cambridge biotechnology hub, the region’s newest economic driver. I sat down with Joseph Martin Sr.’s grandsons, Bo Martin (CEO) and Tom Martin (President), and the company’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Ron Perry, and IT Director, Joe Kirmes, to learn how the company finessed their transition from a major welding and hardgoods supplier to the premier provider of specialty gases and equipment in the emergent Life Sciences market.
