Getting into technical gases: Applications and investments in nitrous oxide

When Belgium-based IJsfabriek Strombeek n.v. began its journey into the industrial gases business in 1904, it did so as a manufacturer of (water) ice and later, carbon dioxide (CO2). More specifically, its entry was made in the gas world by delivering CO2 cylinders for drafting beer at pubs in Brussels and across Belgium.

In recent years the company has furthered its footprint and capabilities in the CO2 business, citing over €30m of investment in its production facilities, a new dry ice hall and its participation in two new CO2 plants in both Antwerp and Ghent harbours as just a few examples.

Yet the IJsfabriek Strombeek story is about so much more than CO2 alone. Few may realise it, but the company regularly changed and expanded its product range to fulfil market needs through the years, and its entry was made into the nitrous oxide business in 1979. This 40-year journey since then has seen IJsfabriek Strombeek learn much about the applications and manufacture of nitrous oxide, as well as establishing a world-class production and distribution operation in the process.
