Green hydrogen in the city: Realising the ambition

The time is ticking fast on climate change – that is the verdict of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which recently published a report warning of the increasing dangers of global warming to the health of Planet Earth.

Meanwhile, the UK Government has recently pledged that greenhouse gas emissions will reach ‘net zero’ by 2050, meaning the need for new sustainable energy sources is ever more urgent.

With this in mind, hydrogen is increasingly being seen as a viable, exciting and sustainable alternative to power public transport in our towns and cities. The Hydrogen     Council estimates there will be 50,000 hydrogen-powered buses and 350,000 hydrogen-powered trucks on the world’s roads by 2030. And Luxfer Holdings PLC is playing its part in making this vision a reality with some recent groundbreaking projects related to road and rail. The company is the world’s largest manufacturer of high-pressure composite and aluminium cylinders, and some of Luxfer’s G-Stor® H2 hydrogen cylinders have been used to help fuel the UK’s first full-sized hydrogen powered demonstrator train.
