Heating Things Up Underwater

TWI (www.twi.co.uk), with headquarters in Cambridge, England, and offices around the world, is a global leader in technology engineering, research, and consultancy and has been involved in underwater welding research for the marine, offshore, and oil and gas industries for over 25 years. TWI’s work has covered consumables, automated underwater welding, and equipment.

In this article, TWI provides a summary of the company’s extensive knowledge of underwater welding.

A Key Technology for Marine Structures

Three main types of underwater welding have been in use for many years. Wet underwater welding, which uses manual metal arc welding (MMA), is the most common process. Flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) has been widely used in the former Soviet Union. And friction welding, which has the advantage of being relatively insensitive to depth, lends itself to robotic operation and has the potential for use in deep water repair.
