Helium – A space odyssey

Many of the most sophisticated applications in the field of cryogenics have been developed at the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Outer space is extremely cold, and so NASA missions require systems that can operate at cryogenic temperatures. Space flight also requires lots of gases for fueling and maintaining rockets and launch capabilities: hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and helium among them.

In this feature, we take a look at the special role helium plays in NASA operations and how its demand is shifting with the changing profile of operations at NASA facilities.
