Hot topic: Structural challenges – Metallurgy sector still in focus for gases industry

Metallurgy has been in the industrial gas headlines a number of times over the last 12 months as the steel sector in particular has faced ongoing challenges in its market dynamics.

Counteracting these dilemmas have been opportunities emerging in aluminium production and – despite its downturn – the steel business, with energy efficient oxyfuel technologies especially in vogue in this area.

The latter prompted gasworld to ask mid-way through 2015 whether a new wave of growth was emerging in the wider metals business. But, the last six months has seen further steel plant closures around the world and, heading into 2016, the metals sector is still in the focus for the gases industry.
