Houston’s hydrogen revolution

Perhaps one of the largest debates in the US hydrogen economy is which state is the capital of hydrogen. Although many states are progressing their individual hydrogen economies, there are two standout performers in the market – Texas and California.

Ever since the initial California Hydrogen Highway Network (CaH2Net) was initiated in April 2004, the state has been regarded as the home of hydrogen in the US. California has become one of the most influential areas for the clean energy carrier not only in the US but across the globe.

However, Houston has traditionally always had a strong market in the oil and gas sector and is widely nicknamed the ‘Energy Capital of the World’. This nickname is not a novelty, with Houston having many users of hydrogen already as well as infrastructure in place that could help establish the state as one of the hotspots for clean hydrogen production, use and exportation.

But although many see this as a rivalry between Texas and California, Brett Perlman, CEO of non-profit organization the Center for Houston’s Future, says the two states have a relationship of feeding off one another to create groundbreaking innovations within the hydrogen space.
