How much hydrogen is produced in the US and the world each year? The answer, like so many things in life, is “it depends.”
More specifically, it depends on what forms of hy- drogen production are counted. Inclusion or exclusion of different hydrogen production forms is often the source of differences in hydrogen production estimates reported by various organizations.
The common view of production for most industries is the quantity of products produced for sale to other companies. For industrial gases, this is commonly referred to as the merchant market, but for hydrogen, this is a relatively small fraction of total production.
