In focus…Cryogenic tanks and tankers

Last month’s feature on cryogenic valves described them as ‘essential to our industry’ due to their daily dealings with cryogenic matter. But if there were no tanks to store the substance in, or tankers to deliver the payload from production to customer, we would have no need for a valve.

This may be a somewhat overly simplistic analysis or comparison of the two, equally important, sections of the cryogenic family of technology – but simplified is a word that cannot be used when trying to find an adjective to fit the task of describing how the tanks and tankers have been developed during the last 30 years to satisfy the ever-expanding reach of the global industrial gases market.

The only thing more important than the storage and transport element of the tanks and tankers industry is the element of safety. Roll-over incidents, which is where the liquid product inside the tanker moves from side to side and in a second wave, pushes the trailer onto its side, are still too frequent an issue. Driver training, and a variety of technology being installed around the driver’s cab to assist in mitigating the risk – like assistive breaking – has increased in provision from companies to increase the safety on every delivery.
