It’s a budding industry that has opened up a wide range of applications for companies within the industrial gas industry, so what exactly is cryobiology?
In practice, it’s the study of biological material or systems at temperatures well below what’s considered to be normal. ‘Materials or systems’ may include proteins, cells, tissues, organs, or whole organisms and ‘temperatures’ range from moderately hypothermic climates to positively frozen conditions.
Fundamentally, it is the study of the effect that these cryogenically cool temperatures have on said materials, meaning that performance is critical on a whole new level in the ‘cryobio’ business. Most biological samples are practically irreplaceable, so there are momentous demands placed on the cryogenic freezing technologies involved.
