150+ dedicated helium production wells, annual exports worth more than $500m and up to 15 purification and liquefaction facilities: These are just some of the many goals laid out by the Government of Saskatchewan to position the Canadian province as a world leader in the helium market, responsible for 10% of the world’s productions by 2030.
An increasingly attractive destination for world leading helium players, Saskatchewan is just one of few jurisdictions in the world that can support helium production as a standalone sector, due to its geology supporting the drilling of dedicated wells. Saskatchewan’s unique geology offers ‘world-class’ helium resources, with deposits of up to 2% helium concentrations and promising shows of up to 7% helium concentrations.
The timing arguably couldn’t be better for Saskatchewan, as the unpredictable helium market this year (2022) faced another major shortage, the fourth this century, resulting in great tightness in production and supply. “I think it’s important that we provide as much of the world’s market as we can, so people have a safe and sustainable supply of helium,” Jim Reiter, Minister of Energy and Resources for the Saskatchewan Government, told gasworld.
