LNG: A remedy for China’s smog problems?

The issue of smog and pollution in China has been in the headlines frequently in both local and international media. The pollution was so bad recently that schools had to be suspended and traffic was also seriously affected in some cities; the Chinese government has announced that it is going to impose several measures to rectify the choking issue.

One of these measures is to encourage the use of alternative and clean fuels, with LNG firmly on the to-do list.

LNG has been growing in popularity in China ever since the natural gas field in Xinjiang was explored in the last decade. At present, two long pipelines running from the far west to the eastern coast, together with terminals that receive imports of LNG from Australia and other countries, are supplying cities in China with this clean fuel. However, natural gas consumption is still lower than that of fossil fuels – the culprit of these infamous smog problems.
