For years, innovation in cryogenic insulation technology mainly focused on the important aspects of creating maximum payload with minimum losses. Most of the attention was on developing technologies around reducing conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer.
The most-important goals in creating new technologies for multi-layer insulation (MLI) were centered only on “keeping it cold,” a goal that still matters when it comes to the reduction of frozen pipes, breached tanks and dewars, or in minimizing boil off that can reduce payload and affect ROI.
But while “keeping it cold” remains the ultimate goal for MLI manufacturers, these days we’re seeing some new addendums to technical data sheets: Companies are now giving more consideration to the safety of their products, and environmental friendliness.
