Marketeers seeking to explain the continuing growth in demand for gas blends used in Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP), point to lifestyle factors related to urbanisation as the underlying impetus.

“The current megatrend is characterised by consumers who are very aware of the need for safe and fresh food products that are free of pathogens, contain no chemical preservatives, are attractively presented and enjoyable to eat. Many of these factors compete with the convenience previously offered by alternative packaging systems,” explains Mark Ewig, Manager of Global Strategic Marketing & Development at Linde Gases.

In developed and developing countries alike, consumers are quite knowledgeable about health risks and are also motivated to support environmental conservation.
