Mass Spectrometry – Generation Next in Defense Detection Applications

When Boston-based 908 Devices, a pioneer of purpose-built devices for chemical analysis, was awarded a contract valued up to $11.5 million by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) this June, it marked another new niche for mass spectrometry (MS) technology in defense applications.

MS is already widely deployed in governmental research applications and matters of national security, while gas chromatography (GC) is also used for the detection of biological and chemical warfare agents. Both are steady growth drivers for specialty gases and equipment today, with increasing government investments in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and academic research studies expected to provide significant thrust to the North American MS market of tomorrow.

Now, 908 Devices — together with partners and subcontractors — aims to blaze a trail in the development of advanced chemical detection devices as it integrates GC with its core High-Pressure Mass SpectrometryTM (HPMS) technology, to create a compact, lightweight device that will provide operators with broader and more advanced analysis capabilities downrange.
