With an estimated population of more than 56 million in 2018, the medical market need – and potential – in South Africa is certainly significant.
The South African Government provides full medical services to the more than 45 million South Africans who fall outside the private medical aid net and as a result are dependent on public healthcare. Figures from Statistics SA, quoted earlier this year by Afrox, show provincial government expenditure on public healthcare stands at over R150bn per year.
This is significant for Afrox (African Oxygen Limited), having revealed the award of the South African State Healthcare Contract to supply medical gases to Government hospitals in April. The contract was effective immediately across all nine provinces of South Africa and the company could yet extend this further, having until the end of September 2018 to extend its supply operations to additional Government healthcare facilities in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Free State, North West and Mpumalanga provinces.
