Meeting EOR and Unconventional Oil and Gas Market Needs

The world’s demand for energy continues to increase. People depend on energy for fuels for transportation, electric power generation, manufacturing and commercial operations, domestic usage, and for many other applications. For this reason, it is important to be able to extract as much of this vital resource as possible from existing and future reservoirs through development of unconventional oil and gas resources as well as enhanced oil recovery (EOR) efforts.

Air Products, the leading global supplier of hydrogen to refineries to assist in producing cleaner burning transportation fuels, has vast experience in working with the refining industry and plays a key role in EOR and unconventional oil and gas exploration in the United States and abroad with an array of product offerings.

Most recently, in November 2012, Air Products strengthened its position in the oilfield services industry by officially dedicating a new liquid nitrogen production facility in Mooreland, Oklahoma. The new facility will produce approximately 250 tons per day of liquid nitrogen and increases Air Products’ existing leadership position in supplying nitrogen to the region’s oilfield services industry. The new plant will focus service on Woodward, Oklahoma and surrounding oil and gas producing areas in the state, and in Kansas and Texas. Nitrogen gas is used in various oil field service applications such as well fracturing, jetting, clean outs, etc., to significantly boost recoverable hydrocarbon reserves, which results in increased revenues for oil and gas producers.

Separately, in Port Arthur, Texas, Air Products’ focus is on carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and providing it for usage in EOR. Described by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) as a milestone in DOE’s Industrial Carbon Capture and Storage (ICCS) program, Phase One of Air Products’ two stage carbon capture project in Port Arthur is now onstream. Ultimately, the project will capture approximately one million tons of CO2 annually— to be recovered, purified by Air Products, and transported by Air Products via a pipeline, owned by Denbury Green Pipeline- Texas, LLC, for injection into the Denbury Onshore-operated West Hastings Unit, an EOR project in Texas.
