Midrex recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first plant – at Oregon Steel Mills in Portland – featuring its direct reduction technology. In 2018, MIDREX® Plants eclipsed the one billion tons cumulative production total.
Every year since 1979, MIDREX Plants has accounted for at least 50% of the world’s direct reduced iron (DRI) production – 60% since 1987. Furthermore, 79% of direct reduced iron DRI produced throughout the world is by shaft furnace-based processes, and the MIDREX Process makes up almost 80% of that total.
