Modernization in a traditional industry

Digitization is arguably one of the hottest topics in the industry. As gasworld’s Global Managing Editor Rob Cockerill affirms, “We are, very much, in the digital age. We are more digitized and connected than ever before…The digital phenomenon has transformed our everyday lives and often in more ways than we even realize.”

It is becoming increasingly apparent that we are standing on the edge of a digital revolution. The result is the reconstruction or destruction of industries, creation of new market spaces, and reshaping of old industry ecosystems.

Tim Fusco, CEO of TrackAbout, the cloud-based asset tracking and management system that helps companies around the world optimize the use of millions of cylinders and other returnable assets, has recognized this trend and is strategizing to help his customers avoid being ‘bitten’ by it. He says, “As Marc Andreessen (the creator of the first web browser and co-founder of Netscape) famously said in a Wall Street Journal article in 2011: Software is Eating the World. By this he means that most business activities are becoming digitized and will eventually be able to be controlled by software. This is an overarching trend that will continue whether we like it or not. Companies must digitize. Customers expect to be able to interact with their suppliers online.”
