Since the earliest days of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Cryofab’s products have played a pivotal role in meeting the demands of the medical market. The Kenilworth, New Jersey-based company has seen first-hand how the global helium shortages have had an impact on the MRI marketplace.
Liquid helium plays an important role in MRI systems, as it cools the superconducting magnet coils to -452.2 F in the scanner, which produces detailed images inside a body. The current designs hold approximately 1800 liters of liquid helium. The scanners lose approximately 1-6% per month of the liquid capacity through normal evaporation.
“While experts say there is a small amount of growth in the MRI market, the sale of dewars has seen a decline because of the helium shortage,” Vince Grillo, Cryofab Co-President, told gasworld.
