Nitrogen in copper mining: A case study in the benefits of on-site nitrogen generation

Nitrogen is used in a variety of mining and mineral processing applications. Usually we are challenged with requirements of relatively large quantities of nitrogen gases for installation in remote areas and harsh environments – this is when on-site production is one of the best choices for nitrogen supply.

Nitrogen is primarily used in the mining industry to inert abandoned areas of mines, reducing oxygen levels and thereby reducing risks of explosion. The inert atmosphere is important for metal processing to prohibit unwanted oxidation.

The advantage of pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology is that on-site gas production in very remote areas – where the access to nitrogen supply is extremely costly and difficult for logistics – is hugely beneficial in a myriad of ways.
