Packaged gas trends in Europe – A microbulk perspective

The diversification and business growth of packaged gases remains a never-ending challenge for industrial gas operators and gas containment equipment manufacturers alike. Liquid gas cylinders (LGCs) as part of the supply chain is no exception.

For the European markets, traditionally dominated more by high pressure cylinders, greater introduction of microbulk supply is still a great challenge. Over the last decade some of the available intelligence estimated the high pressure cylinders pool in Europe is circa 42  million high pressure cylinders, while there are only approximately 80,000 liquid gas cylinders (LGCs) with volumes up to 500 litre water volume in circulation in  the region.

According to the expert opinions expressed during last year’s gasworld European conference in Düsseldorf, Germany, the current growth of industrial gases market in Europe is around 0.5% per annum, with major growth areas being healthcare, medicine and the food industry. With such a macroeconomic background, further falling prices for high pressure cylinders, relatively low needs in gas containment fleets upgrade, and increased competitive pressures finding new reasons to move to LGCs requires good economic and implicational understanding of the packaged gases supply mode for different industries.
