The legalized cannabis industry is moving quickly, but UL (Underwriters Laboratories) has encouraged companies not to compromise on safety and security in a rush to get their product to market.
UL offers advisory services, testing, certification, inspection, audit and training for the legal cannabis and cannabidiol (CBD) industry. A key focus is mitigating risk for the equipment used in the cultivation and processing operations as well as premises security.
Cannabis is a major growth industry for equipment and system manufacturers, and some US industrial gas distributors. To support a safe and sustainable deployment of the technology, standards and testing programs are actively being developed. In February, Underwriters Laboratories Inc published the first Standard developed specifically for the legalized cannabis industry in Canada: Standard for Safety of Premises, Buildings and Equipment Utilized for the Cultivation, Production and Processing of Cannabis (CAN/ULC-S4400). In addition, standards development continues as UL collaborates with stakeholders in the development of UL 1389, Safety of Plant Oil Extraction Equipment.
