Portable particle accelerators: Fermilab’s new cool technology

Fermilab, America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, is in the process of bringing the world together to discover the role neutrinos play in the universe. More than 1,000 scientists from over 30 countries are building the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), hosted by Fermilab.

The new Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) will send a neutrino beam from Fermilab through Earth to a giant neutrino detector at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota.

At the heart of the DUNE experiment is the country’s largest particle accelerator (and the second largest accelerator in the world). According to the US Department of Energy (DOE), which funds Fermilab, particle accelerators have made important contributions to scientific and technological innovation since the early days of the cathode ray tube in the 1890s. Today, there are more than 30,000 particle accelerators in operation around the world.
