Despite intensive and ever enlarging demand, driven in particular by developing economies, the future of the refrigerant gases sector is precariously balanced between efficacy and environmental impact.
The days of high Global Warming Potential (GWP) hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are increasingly numbered. Various stages of phase-out are underway for these products across the globe. With the move into 2015, the refrigerants business enters a key period of transition in Europe.
To control emissions from fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases), including HFCs, the European Union (EU) has adopted two legislative acts: the ‘MAC Directive’ on air conditioning systems used in small motor vehicles, and the ‘F-gas Regulation’ which covers all other significant applications in which F-gases are used.
