Remote POC monitoring: Has remote management of patients and their POCs come of age?

Since the introduction of portable oxygen concentrators (POC) in the 1970s, patients with respiratory issues have experienced a dramatic improvement in the quality of life. There has been a marked increase in people diagnosed with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder) and, consequently, the market for POCs is expected to hit $2.8bn by 2025.

Depending on the severity of an individual’s case, the five-year life expectancy for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ranges from 40%-70%. This means only 40-70 out of 100 patients will survive after five years of diagnosis.

More than three million people die each year from COPD, which is approximately 5-6% of all deaths worldwide. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), COPD will become the third-leading cause of death worldwide by 2030.
