Two years ago, Aqua Sphere engaged in a partnership with the greatest athlete and swimmer of all time, Michael Phelps, to launch and create products for his new MP brand of swimwear. For the Aqua Sphere R&D Textile Team, based in Carros in the South of France, this meant a new and exciting opportunity as it was solicited with the task of developing a competitive racing suit for elite swimmers.
Michael Phelps and his coach, the renowned Bob Bowman, challenged Aqua Sphere to develop a racing suit that distinguishes itself from the other technologies available in the marketplace with particular attention to finding a way to increase the level of flexibility and range of motion to help improve performance. A team of designers and engineers utilised Aqua Sphere’s proprietary technologies to develop a groundbreaking dual fabric technology, Exo-Core, that is an innovative design combination of stability and flexibility fabrics, which serves as the signature feature of the XPRESSO.
Months of extensive research and testing were required to develop a garment that meets the expectations of the highest levels of swim performance. The design team worked tirelessly with Michael Phelps himself and with Bob Bowman’s Elite Team of Swimmers based at the Baltimore Academy. “From the fabric and patterning, to the compression and body coverage, every detail has been engineered to create a performance suit that is fast in the water, comfortable to wear, and looks great,” said Bowman.
