Gas cylinders present several obvious and some less-familiar hazards, including sudden decompression that can propel a cylinder remarkably quickly across the work environment/laboratory and displace breathing air, as well as the risk of explosion or reaction, possible acute toxicity, heavy-object hazards, and personal injury from high-pressure gas streams or cryogenic liquids.
It is perhaps unsurprising then that regulators and industry leaders have been seeking new legislation that meets the new realities of almost all aspects of high-pressure gas cylinders, including their shipping, handling, storage and use.
