A common application for on-site gas mixing is creation of shield gas mixtures for welding. An on-site gas mixer may be used for one welder or hundreds of welders. On-site gas mixing allows the user to control the gas mixture from a single point; gas mixers with gas analysers improve quality control with constant verification of the accuracy of the gas mixture.
Typical two gas combinations used in welding shield gas are carbon dioxide (CO2)/argon, oxygen/argon, hydrogen/argon and helium/argon. Typical three gas combinations used in welding shield gas are CO2/oxygen/argon, CO2/nitrogen/argon and helium/ CO2/argon. An extensive amount of research has been done to determine the optimum gas mixture for a particular welding process. This information is usually available from the gas supplier.
