The Challenges of Creating a Hydrogen Refueling Network

Energy consumption has been rising steadily around the world due to expanding populations, growing industrialization, and emerging economies, resulting in the need for a wider and more diverse range of fuel sources. More environmentally-friendly alternatives to traditional energy sources are being sought to power everything from our homes to entire fleets of ships.

There is no doubt that hydrogen has endless possibilities here, particularly in the transportation sector. When used in a fuel cell, hydrogen opens the door to a completely different power generation technology and aides the transition to a low-carbon economy with zero emissions at the point of use.

Hydrogen has gained recognition as a leading energy source for zero-emission transportation and has received positive reception in California, where its acceptance is related to the most strict climate-protection standards in the US. Elsewhere there is huge potential for a wider refueling network in the US, particularly on the heavily populated East Coast, where new strides are being made (see The Hydrogen Highway Heads East, right).
