The Hydrogen Highway Heads East

I was in grade school when Back to the Future 2 came out, part of which took place in the year 2015. The thing that most stood out in that movie? The hoverboards. What could be more amazing, or fun, than a skateboard that could fly?

The rumor going around class was that hoverboards actually existed — but only in California. Sadly, it wasn’t true, but for a long time, that’s been the story of numerous new technologies and forward-moving initiatives of environment and transport. The much-touted Hydrogen Highway was born and is being raised in California as we speak, but unlike the hoverboards of my youth (as opposed to the hoverboards that exist in current scooter marketing campaigns), it’s very real and it’s beginning to make its way east.

In April, even as they set about remaking the shape of the North American industrial gases business via their recently-closed acquisition of Airgas, France’s Air Liquide announced the opening of four initial hydrogen fueling stations along the Eastern Seaboard. With locations in Braintree and Mansfield, Massachusetts, Hartford, Connecticut, and the Bronx in New York City, Air Liquide has laid the groundwork for what some have touted as the future of fueling.
