The timing is right – An interview with AREVA H2Gen

When AREVA H2Gen was established in 2014 it began so with a mission to become a leading French producer of carbon-free hydrogen. Formed from an alliance of three partners –ADEME, AREVA and Smart Energies subsidiary CETH2 – the company is an industrial start-up that develops and builds Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers, and delivers them globally.

The joint venture (JV) was created from the merger of AREVA Energy Storage and CETH2’s electrolysis assets, while equity investment was provided by ADEME (the French Environment and Energy Management Agency), representing the French state, through its Investissements d’Avenir (Investments for the Future) Programme.

In just three years, the company has already firmly established itself in the clean energy marketplace. From its base in Les Ulis, 25km south of Paris, the company has a 2,800m2 plant – described by Chief Commercial Officer Pascal Pewinski as ‘more of a workshop because building electrolysers is essentially an assembling process’ – from which it ships to many countries worldwide.
