Arguably the biggest story of 2016 was the shock election of Republican candidate Donald Trump to US President, over Democrat rival Hillary Clinton. A hard-fought and often bitter race to the White House was won in November, and culminates in the official transition to President on 20th January.
Many clearly see it as a step in the right direction. Many others will question how progressive it really is. Most will agree it’s an election that taps into a wider disillusionment with the establishment. Universally, it is accepted to have been a historic moment in US politics, and potentially globally too.
Such is the nature of President-elect Trump and the media storm that so swirls around him, that the dust will rarely have the chance to settle on his ascendency to power. But as the news does slowly sink in, the analysis begins in earnest on what the Trump-led America of tomorrow will look like. Will his administration prove to be one of forward-thinking and political innovation? Will his apparently brash persona polarise on the international stage? Will his undoubted business acumen revive the American dream? Time will ultimately tell; so many questions remain.
